Mu Koh Ang Thong Marine Park: A Perfect Day Trip (or Overnight Escape) from Koh Samui

Escape to Mu Koh Ang Thong Marine Park: The most underrated islands in the Gulf of Thailand

Imagine being surrounded by a cluster of over 40 small, lush islands, calm turquoise waters perfect for snorkelling, canoeing or kayaking, secluded beaches, scenic hikes, and the occasional wildlife encounter. Don’t get me wrong—Koh Samui is a fantastic holiday destination. But if you’re craving a true escape into one of Thailand’s most breathtaking marine parks, Mu Koh Ang Thong is the place to be.

Just over 30 km from Koh Samui, this protected archipelago of 42 islands offers a peaceful retreat into nature. Most tour companies based on Koh Samui offer both group and private day trips to the park. Most tours include simple meals, but if you’re planning to kayak, you should arrange that when you book.

Most tours will go around the islands, let the guests snorkel where the water is calm then stop at Koh Wua Ta Lap which is the main island with sandy beach, wildlife animals, a cave and some lookout spots.

Staying Overnight

For those who want to spend the night under the stars or wake up to the sound of waves, there’re simple accommodations on Koh Wua Ta Lap, managed by the national park office. These can only be booked via the Department of National Park website. (Please note that the information are mainly in Thai and the website isn’t very user friendly.)

Don’t Miss the Viewpoint

The park’s iconic panoramic viewpoint is not to be missed. Reached via a steep 500-metre trail from the headquarters area, the climb takes around 25–30 minutes and involves some serious effort—expect ropes along the way to help you up. At the top: an unforgettable view of the islands scattered below like emerald jewels. It’s not an easy climb, but 100% worth it.
