Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui is home to world-class wellness beach resorts—some of which were featured in The White Lotus Season 3. While its pristine beaches are a major draw, the island also offers rich cultural experiences. Highlights include Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple), the vibrant and serene Wat Plai Laem, the whimsical Secret Garden, the scenic Na Mueang Waterfalls, Bo Phut Fisherman’s Village, and a few reputable elephant sanctuaries.

If you want to experience something local, visit Hua Thanon Fisherman’s Market in the morning for breakfast and street food. It’s a Muslim village so there are a lot of cats. I actually lost counts when I was there. The market is not only a culinary destination, but a cultural experience. The beach is also a good spot to watch sunrise.

Koh Samui also serves as a perfect gateway to nearby gems such as Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and Koh Nang Yuan.
To me, Mu Ko Ang Thong Marine Park is one of Thailand’s most underrated destinations. Just over 30 km from Koh Samui, this protected archipelago of 42 lush islands offers a peaceful escape into nature. Many local tour companies offer both group and private day trips to the park—ideal for kayaking, snorkelling, or simply enjoying the serenity.

A short boat ride from Koh Samui takes you to Koh Phangan, an island famed for its Full Moon Party but also deeply rooted in wellness and nature. Beyond the party scene, you’ll find tranquil beaches, yoga retreats, wellness resorts, jungle trails, and waterfalls. Whether you’re hiking through lush landscapes or snorkelling in clear waters, Koh Phangan balances adventure and relaxation beautifully. While day trips are possible, I recommend staying at least 1–2 nights to truly enjoy the island’s diverse offerings.
If you’re more drawn to mountains and rainforest, head to Surat Thani on the mainland. The highlight is Khao Sok National Park, where towering limestone cliffs, dense tropical jungle, and serene lakes create a dramatic landscape. There are several eco-luxury resorts in the area—some nestled in the forest, others floating on Cheow Larn Lake. I personally recommend Elephant Hills, where I’ve stayed before, but I’ve heard there are other wonderful options as well.

And if you’re seeking a serious meditation retreat, Suan Mokkh is the ideal sanctuary to deepen your practice and reconnect with your inner peace. (Please note that, Suan Mokkh is not a tourist attraction, but a place to practice mindfulness.)
